This summer has seen extraordinary heatwave conditions. Record breaking temperatures for July have been experienced in the UK, reaching the hottest day ever recorded for the month on Thursday 25th.  Across the Channel it was even more extreme, with temperatures rising to sweltering levels above 40oC.

Climate change is a fact we have to live with and its effects can cause severe disruption to businesses, not least when heavy flooding or snowfall impedes transport and communication. Extremes of temperature can also cause a wide range of issues, and not least for the logistics sector.

Climate change logistics

Temperature control

Relay specialises in handling precision engineered electronic equipment which requires particularly careful temperature management to ensure it is maintained in perfect condition. This is essential both when our customer assets are stored in the warehouses at our depots and when transported by our vehicle fleet.

Among the resources we have at our technical warehousing facilities is the latest climate control technology, which maintains the ideal temperatures to suit the wide range of fragile and valuable business, medical and other equipment that is regularly entrusted to our care. We were also early adopters of heating in the load compartment of our vehicles to ensure that ambient temperatures are maintained, supporting our other measures for goods in transit such as air-ride suspension, padding and strapping.

Tracking and visibility

Potential disruption to the transport infrastructure from extreme weather can be mitigated by careful journey planning and access to accurate real time information.

Relay has made significant investment in IT and tracking systems to ensure that we and our customers know the exact status of every collection, delivery and installation we carry out. With our nationwide network of depots acting as logistics hubs, we have the resources and expertise to deal with all likely eventualities.

The effects of climate change create challenges, but Relay is well prepared and equipped to meet them head on!
